One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, part 1

Ok, now that you have seen the first "group session" run by Nurse Ratched, comment on the treatment methodology. Based on what you know about on a number of personality theories, does it make sense to use a group setting to help people confront and overcome their problems? What good, if any, could come from Nurse Ratched's "treatment?"

Well, the movie looks very interesting. I would have to say that I DON'T LIKE the "group session". I feel that it makes the people feel awkward and insecure. I know if I was mentally ill, I would not want to be sitting in a group discussing my problems around others. I would feel like I was violated. It is personal information and I don't think anyone feels comfortable sharing inner problems with others unless it is a really good friend they can trust. These guys in the mental institution seem to like each other but I don't think they felt comfortable talking about their problems in front of other.
If done effectively, the good which could come from her treatment would be that the men could share their problems with each other. But I feel as if she talked to the men one-on-one they would more than likely feel a lot more comfortable sharing their problems with her. This should be done in private instead of in a group.

Mike, you need to be more specific ^

who are you, Mr. Yip?

Well, you didn't explain about "What good, if any, could come from Nurse Ratched's "treatment?"

Anyway,

well one on one therapy allows the therapist to directly respond to each person's issues, while in group other people can make rude comments and run everything, plus private therapy gives you this "safe" feeling that no matter what you say its just between you and the therapist, tghis allows the patient to be more open about his/her problems and can recieve better therapy

They're not real special people, real special people are ACTUALLY SPECIAL, like people who do stuff that's actually special, like musicinas and artists. so i will make fun of retards all i want, then do experiments on them like we discussed earlier in teh year

Well I've seen the movie and loved it. I think that group sessions depend on the person's personality. Like there are some people, and we all know at least one, that loves to talk about their problems to everyone. And then there are those who don't feel comfortable talking about personal problems to any given person.
P.S. Don't be hostile guys, its just a blog. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, so try not to rip each others heads off. lol

I believe having a group setting for the mentally ill patients is a incorrect method to broach them. I think that these ill patients should be around "normal people" like Mr. yip, having a setting with a group of ill people would make them even worse then what they are at least "normal" people like mr. yip would at least guide and try to hep these sick people.

Also giving patients medicine for no reason doesn't make any sense to me. Nurse Ratchet is a very stern and strict women that i believe is not suitable for the mentally ill. you need some one loving and patients for these people and nurse Ratchet is the complete opposite. the music in the room also doesn't help the ill think at all, how would u like it if u had to listen to the same music blasting in your ears all day.

there is one benefit that could come out of this setting which is discussing each others problems and talking about them but this shouldn't be done everyday. These patients should have some time outside his place and once in a while come in to discuss and seek for a lil better care with the help of a close person such as a family member

From what I've seen so far of the movie, I don't think that the group session will be as effective and helpful as an individual session would be. Due to the large group, the patients seem to get distracted by each other very easily, therefore they cannot concentrate on getting the proper help. For me personally, I would definitely not want to be in a large group because I would not want others to know the details of my illness. In a one-on-one session, I would be much more comfortable because I would know that the doctor was only listening to and focusing on my needs. It would also be nice to know that my personal information would stay confidential. However, I believe that it all depends on the person and their personality. I think that a group session could also work successfully. I'll see what happens to these patients as we continue the movie...

First, Mike. I quite frankly don't care how you use the word 'retarded' when referring to a person or a blog. It's very rude and it offends people. I would like to possible work with mentally disabled people when I get out of college. The way that you used that word is very offensive to people. So please don't use that word again. Please think before you say something over the internet.

The first session that we watched, didn't seem to work out to well. There was arguing between people, and it seemed as though people's personality's clashed. The put people who didn't like each other, or didn't want to listen to what one person was talking about together. How can you possibly make progress if your with people that you truly don't feel comfortable expressing your feelings with? I know that if I were put into a class where I was expected to express my feelings/thoughts/personal life, I would not give 100%. I would feel intimidated and be afraid of being criticized.

Nurse Ratched to me, gave off the impression of judging people while in these sessions. If she didn't have such a serious look, than she could very well make a good director to the group sessions. I do believe that when working with mentally disabled people, you should do more one-on-one work. You will be able to focus more on the patient. The results would come out much more rewarding and understanding with the patient.

Well I like the movie so far, its funny...I dont believe that the Nurse's method of treatment is good. She puts them in a group so that when they speak everyone is watching and it can make someone with a disorder nervous and uncomfortable which only makes them worse. I mean i dont have a disorder and i hate going up in front of people even if its only 3 or 4....like exhibition! These guys should not have to feel pressured by speaking in front of a group. I don't believe that any good can come from her treatment. The nurse should be fired!

I've seen this film before, and I loved it, it's one of my favorites. Anyway, as far as Nurse Ratched's "treatment" goes, I don't think having patients, who have problems as it is, disscussing each other's problems in a session is going to help. If they all have problems, there advice won't be much helpful. That's not to say, they're not smart, I'm just saying that it doesn't make much sense to have a people who problems trying to help someone who also has a problem, it just wouldn't work. Maybe if each patient went to a private session with a doctor to help them solve their problem, that's a different story.

Michaela and Erin, I agree with you. I don't like the use of the word retarted either. My advisory is in the special needs room and I love the special needs kids. They are so grateful when they win Special Olympics. So, definitely un-called for... Shame on You Mister!

WOW!!!!
Anyways, I think that there hasn't been enough of the movie yet seen to make any judgment what so ever!
We will have to wait and see.
I do want to point out that I think that Mike is right when he says that the group therapy isn't going to work! I think that these individuals should be evaluated separately and then be let into the interaction with others at a later time and point. However, I so think that interaction in the recreation areas are very necessarily needed. I think that it benefits the patients to interact and to see how they do so with others!

McCall Theriault said...

I am really unsure as to what her "treatment" is so I can't really go into the discussion. However, as goes the medications, what ate they and why do the patients need them? They are just mentally unstable how do pills help the matter.

The patients receive no direction or support with their problems. Nurse Ratched seems to pressure them into saying something and then everything spirals out of control as each of the different mental disorders face off against each other, turning into a giant shouting match. Yelling and screaming and crying doesn’t accomplish anything. It actually makes things worse. The patients probably become more and more uncomfortable knowing they will be ridiculed and that Nurse Ratched won’t do anything about it. Each patient would be better off in a one-on-one type discussion. Or at least given the chance to speak their mind without being mocked.

Now, because I’ve seen this film before and I know that Nurse Ratched is the basic root of all evil, I know this treatment is no help what so ever. This confinement. This arguing. This knowledge and acceptance that one is insane does nothing to cure or treat disorder. The different treatments during the time of the film are the crudest of crude. They no nothing about curing the mind.

Erin,
I know that you want to possibly work with special needs children. Mr. Mac came into my advisory one morning when I was working on my portfolio and asked me if I was going to be a special needs teacher. I said "No, but I love special needs children." And he said "Oh that's nice".

Why yes natalie, i wouldn't mind working with the mentally disabled what-so ever. I know what my major will be although I am still iffy about it. While looking at colleges, they didnt carry the Therapeutic Riding program. But I found some colleges that interlock with my major in which I would like to attend...Mr. Mac would be so proud! haha

This blog is ridiculous. Based on what we've watched so far, although I've seen the movie before, I can tell that group therapy is not the answer for these particular patients. In certain situations, it can help people by talking out their issues, such as the depressed. However, the problems they have going on up there are way more complex than a simple group sesh, and Nurse Ratched knows this. I kind of spent four months analyzing everything about this book since I did my ISP on it last year, so I get a little worked up thinking about what I already know. I think because I watched the movie while reading the book I didn't like it so much. I already find it more interesting, so hopefully it'll turn out for the best.

After watching the first group session in the movie, I think it was not a sucessful way of resolvong the patients problems. The patients do not seem eager to talk and don't contribute to the discussion. Nurse hatchet seems to push the men to speak about their pasts, rather then letting them vent on their own. I noticed that nurse hatchet seems to be very power hungry and like her position of power over the men. The only thing I think hatchets therapy sessions are good for is teaching the men how to overcome her authority.

Howdy Yall,
Thus far, the movie has proved to be interesting and entrtaing. Nurse Ratched's group therapy appears to have its ups and downs. The up side would be building self confidence by facing a strong group with a problem or issue that they struggle with greatly. The downs would include the criticism some of the characters recieve from there peers while discussing their problems. I personally feel that the group therapy is not that effective based on the progress I have seen through the characters in the movie.

I think that you need to use different methods for different people. As you can see, some people aren't comfortable sharing their problems in front of people. Nurse Ratched isn't really helping them overcome their problems anyway. She's not allowing them to think for themselves, she's just shoving her ideas down their throats. With someone like Billy Bibbit like you can't really put him on the spot like that. He's very self-conscious and doesn't have enough confidence which we see from his stuttering. Nurse Ratched is just lowering his self esteem even more by sharing his issues in front of the groups and embarrassing him. Nurse Ratched is a cruel woman. I don't like her.

laurynp said...

I think the group session is not helpful. Most of the guys just yell at each other and mock one another. The yelling could be a good cartharsis for the patients, it seems like a time when they can let their feelings out. I also think that Nurse Rachet is completely controlling and feels as though she is superior to the patients. This makes the group session feel uncomfortable and forced

Taozoo4u said...

I believe Nurse Ratched's group therapy meetings can have both a positive and negative effect on those participating. Harding was doing well expressing his feelings during the session, it was when the other members of the group were questioned on how they felt or if they had any input on his story was when the trouble began. McMurphy started instigating then Taber and the other members joined in causing Harding to create a scene, they were all questioning Harding sexuality and this made him uncomfortable and angry.

Anonymous said...

i think that the group therapy is a good idea just not the way nurse ratchet was running the group. if she had maybe ran through tbilly and the problems billy and the others were willing to talk about and then maybe have single sessions between each person.

Roberto said...

Ms. Ratched's group therapy sessions aren't really the most effective treatment for the patients due to half of them just not reacting well to a group environment. Harding for example thinks that half of the insults said are directed at him. Chezwick gets worked up over the smallest incidents which happen pretty frequently due to how exciteable the group is and Taber just likes to instigate everyone, especially Harding. The fact that Rathed is putting all of their personal lives out in the open probably makes everyone uncomfortable.
